Walking to the top of Moel Famau with our toddler

We had a beautiful early March day up here in North Wales, so as a family we decided to take a walk up to the top of Moel Famau. Moel Famau is hill with a a fort on top, better known as the Jubilee Tower. It’s located in an area of outstanding natural beauty between Mold and Rhuthin, in close proximity to the loggerheads country park. We’d visited the previous year with our pushchair, but quickly realised that the path to the top wasn’t pushchair friendly. It’s very steep in places and quite bumpy with patches off loose rock and roots. This time we came prepared with a backpack carrier, so other than the extra weight (2 stone!) and the effect this had on me due to my appauling level of fitness, we were all set to reach the top.

I’d guess its about a 1 mile walk to the top from the Moel Famau Viewpoint car park. Whether you park in the car park is up to you, personally I park just outside the car park to avoid the small fee! It’s just as safe and convenient, and the car park is usually full anyway when the North Wales weather forecast has been kind. I’ll try and remember my GPS next time so that I can upload a 3D map of the route via Google Earth.

Travelling on a bike

In our search for inspiration and information I’ve come across a quite a few blogs now written by families travelling with kids. It seems we’re not alone in our dream to travel the world with our child, and that’s good to know.

Amongst the more appealing to me are the blogs written by families travelling on bikes. These really leapt out at me, despite their being a number of reasons why I hadn’t considered this approach to travelling before. The more I read, the more I like.

My initial concerns on the idea of travelling the world on a bike are as follows… What happens if the bike is stolen? How would we carry all of our gear on a bike? Wouldn’t our child get bored quickly?. That’s pretty much it really, and reading through the blogs of families who have travelled on bikes, and people who are travelling on bikes right now, the more I am coming to realise these aren’t major issues.

Definitely going to give this a lot more thought!

Here are a few of the best blogs I’ve found written by families travelling on bikes. Between them they have everything you could ever possibly want to know on the subject:

Starting to piece the world trip together

We haven’t actually begun planning our world trip in any detail yet, but we have got a plan which is going to help us get started. We both have a a few countries in our heads which we’d like to visit, but we’re going to start by putting together a list of friends and family living in foreign countries. Whilst this wont be the definite list of places we will visit, we think it will help form the backbone of our world trip. Can’t beat free accommodation and a friendly face.

This is just a short post to let you know our intentions, and I’ll post back once we’ve got something more solid pieced together. Any feedback or advice on trip planning would be much appreciated at this stage.

Betws y Coed and the beautiful Swallow Falls in Snowdonia National Park

Swallow Falls

Snowdonia national park is an area of outstanding natural beauty, and thats my personal opinion despite the same line modestly appearing on several road signs on the way in. Betws y Coed lies snuggled at the base of several grand snow capped mountains including Mount Snowdon itself, and needless to say the views on a clear day are breathtaking.  Continue reading this post » Betws y Coed and the beautiful Swallow Falls in Snowdonia National Park
